ABOUT BIG RED
OUR STORY OF ADAM
On June 14th, 2021, we lost our beloved sibling Adam Hobbs, who took his own life after his battle with mental health.
Once news came that Adam had been missing, our family started a search party, extending from Vancouver to Chilliwack. Hundreds of volunteers, including friends, family and community members helped spread flyers and covered as much ground as possible, driving through various cities and back roads throughout the Fraser Valley. To our despair, after 4 long days, we received the news that Adam had passed. It was confusing, devastating and unbelievably heartbreaking.
In our eyes, Adam seemed to have a good life. He had a job that he was passionate about, had a loving and caring family, a good group of friends as well as numerous hobbies including hockey and gaming.
Adam grew up with his brothers Brandon & Zachary and his two cousins Julia & Jake. We spent most of our childhood together and formed a bond as siblings, spending every holiday, vacation, birthday, and numerous outdoor adventures enjoying each other’s company. We were as close as 5 kids could be, which remains to this day.
There was a certain sense of confusion when we found out Adam had passed. We knew him as a fun, goofy, heartfelt friend and brother who was always there to lend a hand and make us smile. The reality is, mental health is very far from understood. For that reason, the 4 of us have created the Big Red Mental Health Society, dedicating our efforts to educate others about the importance of mental health.
Our purpose is to not only honour Adam’s life, but to promote the importance of mental health education and awareness in the Fraser Valley, British Columbia, and Canada, while supporting those affected with mental health issues.
Our goal is to create an awareness, acceptance, and overall comfort for those who have been and still are affected by anxiety, depression, PTSD, or suicidal thoughts.
We aim to help end the stigma around mental health illness by creating a conversation within our community, hosting events, and raising funds for foundations and charities that focus on mental health initiatives.
Depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues are not a weakness and with the proper support, we strive to reduce the number of suicides amongst men in Canada.
Thank you for supporting the Big Red Mental Health Society.
With much love,
Brandon, Julia, Jake and Zachary
